The Code addresses those construction, protection, and occupancy features necessary to minimize danger to life from fire, including smoke, fumes, or panic. Exit signs are required to meet specific characteristics, as stated in section 7.10.4 of the Life Safety Code. According to www.energystar.gov, an exit sign is a sign that is permanently fixed in place and used to identify a means of egress. For the purposes of qualifying as an EnergyStar, an exit sign must have an illuminated, legally required legend (for example, the words EXIT, TO EXIT, FIRE ESCAPE, FIRE EXIT, TO FIRE EXIT, etc.) Exit signs must remain illuminated via an emergency power source in case there is a disturbance in the normal power supply. Their power input must be 5 watts or less per sign. For electrically-powered, internally-illuminated signs, any leading power factor is satisfactory. A lagging power factor not less than 0.7 is acceptable. EnergyStar also requires replacement of defective parts for 5 years from date of purchase.
