When done properly a custom sign will last for years to come with minimal maintenance cost; however, cheaply built signs may very well fail in as little as a few months. A sign is no good if you or your customers cannot clearly see it from a distance with enough time to realize they have arrived at their destination. Ensure your custom sign is visible from at least 100 feet. Of course this means the more text the bigger the sign to accomplish clear visibility. Also the placement of the sign will have a significant impact on the visibility and readability of your sign. Many signs are double sided however if you have a single sided sign then make sure it is clearly visible from oncoming traffic. Is your sign easy to read at sunrise, midday, sunset and throughout the night? If you are located in a business park that has no traffic at night then lighting may be of minimal concern.
