ENERGY STAR Environmental Achievements

ENERGY STAR was founded in 1992 by the EPA. It has two goals. One is environmental. The other is financial. The environmental goal is to improve the climate by reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the air.

During its 21 years, ENERGY STAR has partnered with 18,000 organizations, including several Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, school districts and hospitals. ENERGY STAR reported that as of the end of 2012 its program has prevented more than 1.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the earths atmosphere. This achievement reduces air pollution and reduces the damage to earths ozone layer, which protects the planet from damage caused by the suns radiation.

The charts on ENERGY STAR'S website show that the program has become more successful each year. . In 2012, the program prevented about 242 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere.

ENERGY STAR'S Financial Achievements

ENERGY STAR'S financial goal is to help businesses and individuals save money via energy efficiency.

ENERGY STAR has succeeded, according to data on its website. As of 2012, its program had saved individuals and businesses more than $230 billion on utility bills. In 2012 alone, the program saved about $24 billion. ENERGY STAR attributes the cost savings to investments in energy-efficient technologies and practices that will continue to provide bill savings for years to come.

The money that individuals and businesses have saved tells only part of the story because ENERGY STAR estimates that the reduction in greenhouse emissions provided societal benefits of $5.8 billion in 2012 alone. The societal benefits include improved human health and agricultural productivity as well as reduced property damages due to fewer floods.
